The brief

Wildlife photographer with fine-art prints. Wanted a real shop for years, but Etsy/Instagram took too much margin and returned no customer data.

The solution

Own Mollie webshop with customer portal, gift cards and discount codes. Newsletter built in with open/click tracking. NL/FR for both Flemish and Walloon audiences.

Allard is a wildlife photographer selling fine-art prints. For years that ran via Instagram and Etsy: visible, but every sale cost margin and returned no customer data. He wanted a real shop that was his, for both Flemish and Walloon audiences.

Key decisions

Mollie over Stripe

The audience is largely Belgian. Mollie offers Bancontact and lower fees for local payments — directly relevant to margin.

Customer portal from day one

Not just selling but keeping customers: order history, reorder, downloads. A platform never gives that back.

Gift cards + discount codes

Fine-art is often gifted. Gift cards opened a sales channel that didn't exist on Etsy.

Timeline

Month 1 — Shop foundation
Catalogue, variants (size/frame), Mollie checkout, VAT-correct invoices.
Month 1 — Customer portal
Login, order history, downloads, returns handling.
Month 2 — Growth tools
Gift cards, discount codes, built-in newsletter with tracking.
Month 2 — NL/FR + launch
Full bilingual rollout, soft launch with monitoring.

What I'd redo

We started broad with many product variants. In hindsight a smaller, sharper offering sold better. Next time I'd rather launch with fewer SKUs and expand based on what actually sells — less build, faster learning.
